This week, I am extremely excited to meet up with a few other Queens/Valley Stream mom's, who are members of Mocha Moms, to discuss, "The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates" at Pretty Toni's Cafe , who by the way is a woman and not a man as I previously thought, on Merrick Road right here in Valley Stream. I am excited because I get to taste Pretty Toni's shrimp while sipping on a cocktail as we did this past Mother's Day. The cafe is a quaint spot intimate enough to have a private dinner for two or host a small scale event with friends. If having juice boxes at the ready makes them kid friendly, well then that makes them kid friendly.
As jazz is piped through the sound system, the other mom's and I will talk about how two African American boys from the same Baltimore neighborhood ended up on two totally different paths. What could have been done differently to save Wes from a life of imprisonment? What was it that turned the life of the other Wes, the author, into an accomplished man, White House Fellow, Rhodes Scholar, loving husband? Was it good parenting, lack of good parenting, sacrifice or the inability to make sacrifices? This young man has a promising future as I have been fortunate enough to meet he and his wife Dawn. This book is a must read for those with sons. It's a must read for those with children who are heading down the wrong path. Sometimes it is what you know instead of who you know. Knowledge is definitely power. Get the book.
