Danse Xpressions to Perform Hip Hop & More @ Community Fest

Rockaway Avenue will be shaking and moving to hip hop, tap, and ballet this weekend as approximately 20 students from the community represent Danse Xpressions, LLC during the Valley Stream Community Festival.  The dance company hits the Children's Area at 12:30 p.m. on Rockaway Avenue between Merrick and Lincoln Avenue in Valley Stream.

Danse Xpressions, LLC is a family-owned and family-operated dancing school that was established in 1996. The mission of the dancing school is to reach out to the neighborhood by getting them involved in a safe, entertaining, and productive activity. The program teaches dance, with a professional touch, and emphasizes discipline, self-esteem, and team performances. We offer classes in Ballet, Pointe, Modern, Tap, Jazz/Hip-Hop, Afro-Caribbean, Gymnastics, and African Drum Lessons.

7 Tips for Selecting A Dance School

A Valley Stream Mom fan contacted me about dance school advice.  Is it that time already?  Yep.  I have never taken dance but I have been around dance for at least 12 years.  As a former pageant director and coach I have become pretty good at judging technique after working with very talented teens over the years.

When searching for a dance school, I advise you to:

1.  Ask for a DVD of their last dance recital.  Critique the dancers, costumes, and music.  I recently learned from a mom that she witnessed a dance group performing to music with explicit lyrics.

2.  Be weary of the amount of trophies or posters announcing their competition wins.  I don't personally want my daughter in a school that's too heavy on competing because it becomes more about the dance school reputation and less about teaching my kid technique.  Ever watch Dance Moms?

3.  Most schools do not invite you into the studio during class, but it doesn't hurt to ask.  However, if you can hold your ear up to the door, try to listen how the teacher speaks to the kids.  If it's demeaning, run. I believe that you can speak to a child and correct their technique without killing their self esteem and pissing me off.

4.  My daughter's tap teacher recently said that she doesn't teach what she can't do.  Run.  Your child's training will be limited.  Hmmm...looks like I have a decision to make soon.  However, if the school offers what I believe are called Master's classes which bring in outside dancers in to teach certain techniques, stay put.  That's a good sign.

5.  Former Miss New York says: "I would read the teacher's bios and see what their background is. Make sure they have strong credits and depending on what you are looking for, technique, performance, etc... match it to what your goals are then I would say you'd have a pretty good idea."

6. Michigan Dance School Owner says: "A few things to consider...at a young age being sure that the teachers want the students to accomplish and excel in the basics. To many places are focused on grooming strictly competitive dancers and that is how they teach. Also, how does the studio feel?  Most places will allow you to view a class or may even let you try one out."

7.  She continues and says, "A strong teaching staff but I have learned over the years that even though your resume has a lot of impressive items on it, it does not mean that you are a great teacher, that just means you have personal talent. Look at the dancers from the beginners up to advance and see how the students seem to be progressing."

Danse Xpressions Presents "The Wiz" Today!

Ease on down to the Village Bandshell tomorrow at 4 p.m. for Danse Xpressions' rendition of "The Wiz."  I stopped by the dance camp yesterday morning to snap a few photos and I immediately became excited when I learned they were doing this piece.  I can't say this enough but I LOVE THE WIZ! It is and will always be my favorite musical.  I even sang a song or two from the soundtrack during my pageant days.  But this is not about me and my longing to play Dorothy while easing down the road.

It's about the talented youngsters ranging from Munchkins, literally, to teens who have dedicated their summer vacation to learning new dance moves and lines in order to bring you their rendition of The Wiz.  For FREE!!!

Now the school isn't presenting the piece line by line, dance move by dance move.  They are putting their very own flavor on it.  What's also interesting is that all of the costumes were created by the dancers themselves during the arts and craft portion of the summer camp.

Are you excited yet?  Bring your lawn chair, blanket, snack and excitement to see this amazing performance by Valley Stream's talented youth.

Danse Xpressions Summer Camp Performs This Friday

Danse Expressions will celebrate the end of its summer dance camp with a special performance at the Valley Stream band shell this Friday, August 5th beginning at 4 p.m.  Although the performance is for the parents of the dancers who participated in the camp, I'm sure the family owned business won't mind a few potential students and their families bringing their lawn chairs and a cooler filled with beverages to watch the performance.

During the camp, dancers arrived at 8:30 a.m. ready to participate in daily dance classes, outdoor physical activities, arts and crafts, daily academic time, daily snack, a weekly trip (for an additional fee), and received a dance camp t-shirt.  The day concluded at 4 p.m. for the minimal cost of $900 which breaks down to, if you think like me, $4.80/hour.  That's cheaper than a full time babysitter which averages about $10 around here. Not bad!

Summer Schedule Finally Finalized

I'm back up and running after nearly a week without a computer. Ours finally gave out. We knew it was coming so it wasn't much of a surprise. But I'm back!

The last few weeks have been hectic for me trying to finalize the summer schedule for the kids. Once your child turns 5 years old, the opportunities increase. Not only can children 5 year old and up sign up for summer camps affiliated with your district public school at an affordable price, they can also apply for their very own library card. This is huge! My eldest checked out her very first library book and was extremely proud of this accomplishment. She actually mistook the library card for a credit card and told everyone that she bought her first library book. How cute was that? I guess I should start using more care around her and stop using my credit/debit cards so much.

Last week, I sat down with all of the flyers and program information I collected from various places and events in the community. I then created a spreadsheet on the computer before it died on me. After much thought, I decided to sign my eldest up for tennis, swim, our school district's school summer camp, and tap. We are also taking advantage of Hofstra University's Saturday classes for young people. Later this week, I will share with you what options are available to fill in the weeks between the last day of school and the first day of summer camp. I love my children, but my kids go nuts if they're not out doing something. They're very active children so it's my job as a parent to make sure they stay active.

What are you doing to fill the gap of time between the last day of school and first day of camp?
