Ann, I know How You Feel

I admit that it was a bit awkward to watch the adorable Ann Curry at times.  I didn't get her wardrobe choices and hoped at some point someone would rush in to fire her stylist.  But that didn't happen.  After all of these years of reporting for The Today Show, one would think sitting in the big chair would be a piece of cake.  Looks like it wasn't.  It's probably like a singer being able to sing perfectly without jitters at Carnegie Hall, but  being nervous to sing at an audition where there are just a handful of people.

I knew what Ann was going through, minus the million dollar package and fame.  To have to come to work everyday knowing that your name was THE rumor mill.  As you walk down the hall, or in her case appear on TV, the whole office/world was whispering about you and who is going to replace you.

How do I know?  It happened to me.  You may have heard of my former boss.  He made headlines a few years ago after his 2nd marriage was highlighted in the New York Times Society Pages.  He met his wife while attending events at his children's school.  While his current wife was with him.  The two families even hung out together.  Vacationed together.  Scumbag. Well, actually I liked working with him until the day I was called in to his office to schedule a round a layoffs of all of the SVP's in the department.  Then my name came up.  Wait, what?  Apparently, he wanted someone to support him "who didn't have a life."  Yep.  That's what he said.  I had it on tape until I deleted it because the woman he wanted to replace me with was given access to my computer and phone code.  For some reason, his phone would dial my phone and I would receive odd recordings from his office.  It was a blessing in disguise but I erased it like a dummy.  Yes, I was done dirty.  He tried to replace me on the spot with an unmarried, motherless, lifeless woman who was the department's busybody.  I got the news October 25, 2009 and stayed in my position until December 17th. I think working moms should be a protected group.  Once we have children, we become targets.

I think working moms should be protected from workplace discrimination

Why me?  I think it's because I started to question the weird travel expenses and wondered "who" he was meeting with during the day when he would just disappear.  I am not going to discredit my reputation for anyone.  The person he replaced me with had no morals or values in my opinion and was the perfect person to replace me.  Until he left her high and dry as well when the drama of his personal life leaked until his professional life.  Karma is a.....

I came to work every day with this weight on my shoulders, just as Ann has for the last few weeks.  Put yourself in her shoes.  She carried herself with grace and dignity by showing up for work and continuing her job as a professional should.  I did the same.  People asked me how on Earth was I able to do it.  It was hard, I admit.  I gained my strength by listening to Gospel music, the support of my husband, friends and of course, many conversations with God.  The music was uplifting.  I read alot to keep my spirits high.  I was beyond hurt.  I guess I should have known my boss was a jerk after offering me the job on my 2nd day of temping for his vacationing assistant.  The day I left, I didn't even say goodbye.  Childish, but I didn't want to give him another look.  When people show you who they are, believe them, says poet Maya Angelou.

I never set out to be a stay-at-home-mom, but God had another plan for me.  Some days I want to go back to work, and some days I want to stay home with the kids.  Most days I would love to work from home or even part time at an office.  We'll see what happens.  Valley Stream Son starts Kindergarten in September 2013 so we'll see what the wind blows my way.

Ann, you were a class act this week knowing what was about to go down.  I know you probably wanted to cut back on all the travelling and reporting from the field, but I enjoyed you out there.  Let Savannah take the job.  Let's see how long she lasts.  TV and Corporate America is a cut throat world.

Watch yo' back people.  Best of luck, Ann.

How to Feed 19 Children

I can't even imagine trying to feed 19 children.  The secret they say is patience, stamina, and skill? I never know from day to day what to feed the two that I have. Anybody know what Mr. Duggar does for a living to be able to support this clan?

School Social Worker Position Eliminated

Although my family and I live in School District 13, we spend alot of time supporting the school programs in District 30 from school carnivals to its cultural programs.  Last year as I began promoting the Sparkle Empowerment Program for Girls, I sent information to every elementary school in all three districts, as well as the Valley Stream Central High School District.  Only one school contacted me directly to learn more about the program.  The person who contacted me, and still stays in touch with me today, is Laurie Buelvas-Kritas.  Now her position has been eliminated.  After speaking with her I can tell that she has a true heart for the children she serves and wants to expose them to every opportunity possible.  She has invited me to promote my program to all of the schools in her district.  Even when she knew her job was on the chopping block.

It truly saddens me to learn that School District 30 has eliminated this position.

Have YOU Thanked A Teacher Today?

I was told to thank a teacher today.  Each time I visit my daughter's Kindergarten class, I don't leave without saying to the teacher, "How do you do this?"  I'm sure she has a Google, as my kids would say, amount of patience.  That is one characteristic I often find myself praying for.  I knew before I had children that this is one thing I would struggle with and I was right.  I am doing better especially now since I have mastered "the look" which stops my children from misbehaving.  Most times anyway.

Tomorrow as I attend the Parent/Teacher conference, I will thank her for all that she does with my child and the 24 others in her classroom.  Other than the notebook/magazine homework the teacher sends home each Monday, my daughter likes school.  Well, unless it's on a day where my nursery schooler doesn't have to go to school, then she gets jealous.  Sitting at a table of five 6 year olds to supervise class craft projects for a short 30 minutes stresses me out.  They don't sit still.  They say the silliest things.  They don't always listen.  I guess it's sort of like my home times 24.

Thank your child's teacher today.  If it weren't for school, your child would be home with you all day everyday. Now that's a scary thought.

Kids & Cavities

This story totally floored me.  On a day where I JUST returned from a second week of pediatric dental visits for my 3-year old, I see that our household situation is not as bad as the teething tots in this article.  To not brush your child's teeth because he/she doesn't like it should be seen as a form of neglect.  In my opinion anyway.  The result is a mouthful of cavities so bad that a child has to undergo surgery?  I can't imagine letting my child's teeth get that bad.  Who wants to smell that breath too?

The moment our daughter neared two years old, we went to a local Brooklyn dentist recommended by neighboring parents.  He got paid to do nothing.  Our daughter wanted nothing to do with the dentist and cried the whole time. He may have looked inside her mouth but I don't recall him brushing her teeth with bubblegum toothpaste.  We still got a bill.  We didn't go back.

My son getting "gassed" in the Candy Shop Room
xxThe second time she visited a pediatric dentist way out in Manhassett, where a snotty receptionist made me feel as if I were inconveniencing her, my daughter peed on me.  How?  She wouldn't sit in the dental chair alone so I was asked to sit with her to subdue her if she were to resist the dentist's requests.  All of a sudden things started to get warm and wet.  Note to new parents: make sure your kids go potty before dental visits.  Bring a change of clothes too.

The third time I searched far and wide to find a pediatric dentist.  We did and we love her.  However, she is out of network.  That means outta pocket.  She always seems to find at least one cavity in our children's mouths.  The first time, I get it.  The second time, what's really going on?  We brush our children's mouths twice a day, but their juice intake needed adjustment.  Now we are discouraging strawberry milk and trying to limit their juice intake to just breakfast and dinner.  Our kids are great about drinking water.  As long as it's ice cold.
My daughter in the "Barn Yard Room"
Two weeks ago during the last visit to the dentist, each kid was diagnosed with two cavities.  We were previously encouraged to brush their teeth and not to let them brush them.  Our dentist still brushes her 9-year old's teeth.  Dreaming of the day where I can send my daughter into the bathroom dirty and she miraculously comes out clean has now been pushed further into the future.  The bedtime routine is, as my son would say, super-duper-ooper-schmooper long as it is.  However, we brush them.  Cheese.  Ahhh... Cheese. Tongue.  That's the brainchild of my husband.  He's cool like that.

Our kids still developed cavities.  How?  They brush twice daily.  They take multi-vitamins with fluoride.  Water on Long Island does not have fluoride in it.  We buy the mini Poland Spring water bottles which I have both in the house and in my trunk.  We have never sent them to bed with a bottle of juice.  Candy is limited if at all.  We do keep a mini bottle of water in their rooms so we won't have to go downstairs for a glass of water, the universal request at stall tactic used by tots across the world at bedtime.  As I write this post, I notice that the drops my 6 year old is taking is for children 6 months - 4 years old.  Hmmm.....I'm on the phone now with the dental office now.   Could this be the culprit?

$240+ in dental work later per child, turns out my daughter's fluoride prescription was wrong.  Great.

Valley Stream Has An Intel Semi-Finalist Too

Photo Courtesy of Long Island Herald

I found the text below on the Valley Stream Central High School District website and thought it worthy of sharing.  We have all heard of the homeless Long Island teen who was a finalist, received an invite by her local representative to attend last week's State of the Union, and went on a media blitz.  She was even awarded a $50,000 scholarship on the Ellen Show.  While we all love a rags to riches story, sort of, we can't forget to honor those living right here in our own back yard.  Read on...
--------------

Valley Stream Central High School District is proud to announce that Mariyam Qureshi, a senior at South High School, has been selected as a Semifinalist in the Intel Science and Talent Search Competition. The national Intel program is a premier accomplishment that highlights the top students in science research today. Mariyam is one of approximately 300 high school semifinalists nationwide competing for a chance at the finals and a trip to Washington, DC.

Mariyam’s project, entitled “Dynamics Underlying Tissue Integrity,” created an alternate solution to kidney failure in the form of an artificial kidney. Over the last two years, she worked with mentor Amit Ron, a post-doc at a mechanical engineering lab at Columbia University, on the beginning stages of the artificial kidney. “I knew I couldn’t actually create an artificial kidney myself, but I wanted to contribute to a project like this,” Mariyam said of the honor. She chose the subject matter based upon a history of kidney failure in her family.

Currently in the top of her class at South, Mariyam has also been named an AP Scholar with Distinction and received Senior Division Honors with a separate project at the Long Island Science Congress last year. Although undecided about where she plans to attend college in the fall, she has chosen to major in either biology or pre-med. South High School has had two other Intel Semifinalists over the last ten years, as well as two Intel International Science and Engineering Fair winners.

Congratulations to Mariyam on this honor and best of luck in advancing to Finalist standing. Finalists will be announced at the end of January.

No-No to This Teen's Photo

I've been cooped up in the house for the last two days with a sick child and the only thing I have been able to do is blog and watch TV.  Wednesday morning, while watching the Today Show, I learned of 18 year old Sydney Spies, a senior from Durango, CO, who is doing all that she can to put a non-traditional senior class photo into her yearbook.  Why am I weighing in on this?  I have one reason.  I'm a mom and it's just a bad idea.  I would never allow my daughter to take such photos for a senior yearbook.  I'm already prepared for the prom dress fight.  The yearbook isn't a modeling portfolio and the chance of an agent leafing through this book to discover her is nil.  Yes, she is legally an adult but clearly she is not mature enough to make sound decisions.  I do think she is a very pretty girl but one who clearly needs a little guidance.

Are You A Dipper or a Douser?

The hot topic of the day in the world of children's health is ketchup or catsup, however you say it or spell is your business.  The French are basically saying that it's not healthy.  Or are they really trying to get the Americans back for dousing the #1 food amongst kids (in my house anyway) with the red sauce covering up the natural taste of the food?  What's the real motive?  When you think about it, it's already an unhealthy food before one drowns it in ketchup.  It's fried people so how about the French talk about that?  I personally only use ketchup when I'm at home.  I don't use it nor do I allow my kids to use it while driving in the car.  Don't judge me as I know I shouldn't eat on the run, but if Panera Bread or Boston Market had a drive through that's where I would be.  But they don't in my neighborhood.

My kids eat the sauce more than I do and just yesterday, my son elected to eat hot dogs for lunch.  While my husband chooses to cover his food with the sauce, it appears as if my children have adopted my dipping gene.  Maybe I influenced them, I don't know.  As I glanced over to make sure my son was eating, I caught him putting what appeared to be a glob of ketchup in his mouth.  It was actually a hot dog covered in ketchup.  Yuck, but whatever it takes to finish your meal I'm all for it.

There are healthier types of ketchup now and I have actually purchased a few.  I don't taste much difference.  Try these healthier options and stay away from the Gayle King method (hear her say it on her show this morning) who uses ketchup and mayonnaise.  Double yuck.
