Cultural Kids: Carnegie, Mozart, and More

The Itty Biddies @ Brooklyn Public Library

I think it's very important to expose children to the arts at an early age.  My youngest can't sit still when he hears a beat.  We listen to Ella Fitzgerald often during dinner time and the boy just can't sit still.  I think he even tried to scat once while sitting in his car seat.  Our daughter takes ballet and tap and will soon trade tap for an instrument.  I'm not going to drive myself crazy with too many activities.  Right now, she has an interest in playing the violin.  If it doesn't work, we'll try something new.  In the meantime, exposure is best as stated by Charlotte Mason Method who believed in exposing children to music and art in many different forms.  You'll definitely want to check out the many cultural events listed below and see how your child responds.  Take snacks and alternative enjoyment if they don't like it.  Hey, they're children.  It could go either way.

Here is a list of upcoming cultural events you may want to take your stinkers to.

Free Music Together Demo - Registration Limited

My kids simply loved this class.  As a matter of fact while living in Brooklyn in 2006, it was my then 6 month old daughter's very first class.  Shortly after moving to Valley Stream over 4 years ago with our then 2 year old daughter, I found a class right here in Valley Stream at Broadway Bound Dance Studio.  It was a struggle for me to sit on the floor for very long being 4 months pregnant and all at the time.  Wait, maybe sitting down was the easy part.  Getting up wasn't as easy.  Miss Dorell, owner of In Step With Music Together LLC, was the instructor and I recall one mom with the cutest little girl, next to mine of course, who was so happy and energetic.  Miss Cheryl later became an instructor and my son's first crush. Well, that's the way I see it anyway but maybe it was the first sign of him being a flirt.

Anyhoo, Music Together is a class that every child should experience, and ValleyStreamMom.com wants you to do just that.  For FREE!!!  You know I LOVE all things FREE!  Details are below.  If you are unable to register, please email me at valleystreammom@gmail.com to be placed on the waiting list.  For priority registration, register with ValleyStreamMom.com by clicking on the link foron the right hand side of the menu bar at the top first dibbs.  Trust me.  It's worth it.

Music Together is an internationally recognized early childhood music and movement program for babies, toddlers, preschoolers, kindergartners, and the adults who love them. First offered to the public in 1987, it pioneered the concept of a research-based, developmentally appropriate early childhood music curriculum that strongly emphasizes and facilitates adult involvement.
Music Together classes are based on the recognition that all children are musical. All children can learn to sing in tune, keep a beat, and participate with confidence in the music of our culture, provided that their early environment supports such learning.

Voices of Virtue Youth Choir + Ticket Giveaway

They've sang in Prague, Austria, and Italy and they're just teenagers.  Voices of Virtue Incorporated is a community based choir and non-profit organization that boasts the talents of at-risk teens living in various parts of Hempstead. The choir was established not only to provide a performance platform for talented youth  and young adults throughout Long Island, but it also serves as a fundraising agent to aid the efforts of the Hempstead Select Chorale.  Current membership includes existing and post Hempstead High School choir members.  However, membership is open to all on Long Island

"The founding of Voices of Virtue, Incorporated is the result of my strong belief that nothing surpasses experiential knowledge," says Rachel Blackburn, Founder/Executive Director.  This organization is an ideal platform where students musical talents exposes them to the community, nation and world they will one day impact".

I Don't Like Candy Corn

Do you know that candy corn ingredients include sugar (no surprise there), corn syrup, wax (wait, what?), water, fondant (looks pretty on cakes but it's too hard), and marshmallows for soft bite.  How gross.  I truly dislike candy corn but it will be one of the toppings at the "Wear it Again" Costume Party hosted by ValleyStreamMom.com on Saturday, November 5th.  Tickets available now!

Meredith LaVande Visits Lynbrook this Wednesday

I recently read in the Valley Stream Herald that Meredith LaVande is coming!!  I have to admit, I had absolutely no idea who this performer is but apparently she's pretty big on the pre-school set.  Which is the reason why I'm not sure I don't know who she is because I have preschoolers.  If you know who this is, please comment on this blog below and help me get in the know in case we decide to attend the concert. She is also appearing in Merrick on Tuesday, August 16th @ 6:30 p.m.
