Once Upon A Sundae Celebrates St. Patrick's Day

Boy, has my daughter been waiting for THIS event. Ever since my son and I attended last week's Pirate themed event, and he told her, I have been asked daily when we were going back. Just announced this morning on Facebook, that where will be 3 story time sessions this week. It is totally worth it. Last week, the pint-sized pirates were given a coloring sheet, read a Pirate story, created a treasure chest WITH coins, fake of course, AND made their own sundae complete with EVERY topping possible.

Today's Library Events & More

In order to clean up the site a little bit, the Library link is now on the Navigation Bar at the top of the page for easier access.  In addition, I have added links to other nearby libraries.  I have found that many area libraries allow residents from neighboring communities to participate in their programs two days before the scheduled event.  The Valley Stream Library has a few events scheduled for Wednesday, December 28th that are worth checking out.  Enjoy!

Alphabet Soup
Time: 11 a.m.
Ages 3 - 5 years old

Circle Games
Time: 2 p.m.
Grades K - 2

Kwanzaa Craft
Time: 4 p.m.
Grades K - 6

Registration is required.

Children's Safari is also hosting a superhero themed event.  There are no details on their website, but there is information on their FB page. I may attend just to see if the games have been repaired.  I really hope they have been.

Oceanside Bounce U has a great line up of open bounce times you can find here.

Don't forget about yesterday's post that lists all of Rockville Centre Recreation's Winter Break events for kids.

Chilibeans - A Perfect Place for a Playdate

Last week, the kids and I had a playdate at Chilibeans in Hempstead and boy did they have fun! Located about 15 minutes away from Valley Stream, Chilibeans is located inside at what appears to be a church. I never did make it to the front of the building to see the exact name of the church, but you could tell it was a church. After we parked the car on the street adjacent to the parking lot, we went up two short flights of stairs to the entrance. Once inside, the kids took their shoes off and immediately ran for the room on the right which had a rock climbing wall, mini jungle gym/slide, and bouncy all neatly packed into a room that appears to be a nursery school room during the day. Music played from a small boom box in the corner as they kids bounced themselves silly. After they discovered another room right across the hall, they all ran into that room to find yet another bouncy, slide with tunnels, and a hippo that they absolutely loved! While the kids played, I snuck down the hall to see if there were additional rooms. There were two more rooms both set up to house the pizza, juice, and birthday cake segment of a birthday party. This place was extremely cute, clean, professionally managed, and definitely worth another trip. Even the bathrooms were adorable. I didn’t get to see inside the girl’s bathroom, but I did get to see the boy’s bathroom. My son had to tinkle and since my friend and I were the only ones there with our kids I saw no reason not to take my son into the boy’s bathroom which was painted like an aquarium and ever so cute.

I personally can’t see my 5 year old hosting her 6th birthday here, partly because I told her no more parties until she turns double digits, but I think this venue is more appropriate for the 5 and under crowd. I could be wrong but go see for yourself. Mommy, Daddy, Granny, Nanny & Me programs are also offered.

Children's Safari Gets a Time Out

I truly enjoy taking my kids to different playspaces for the experience, but there's nothing like supporting a business right in your own community.  About two weeks ago, I posted the Children's Safari event featuring the Gabba's from Nick Jr.  I was excited for my kids, because I personally find the show annoying.  I do enjoy some of the silly songs on the show and find myself reciting some of the lyrics just to get my kids to eat or when I want to watch my youngest go nutz with the "Hold Still" song.

After picking up my eldest's pre-school friend from her home, we headed on over to Safari and found a prime parking spot right in front of the building.  Score!  Not only that, but the moment we pulled up to the prime parking spot, the theme song from "Yo Gabba Gabba" came on Sirius XM's Kid's Place Live radio station.  Twilight Zone, right?  I kid you not.  So after we danced in our seats to the song, the kids unbuckled themselves. As I turned to let my son out, I noticed the building was a little dark.  I then saw a high school aged kid wearing an employee shirt come out and I ask him if Safari is open.  He tells me that they open at 3:30 p.m. for open play.  I said, really?  Facebook said the Gabbas were here and the event starts at 2:30 p.m.  He told me that was yesterday.  Disappointment!  I immediately went on Facbook via my phone and there it was.  I was right!  I then took the kids to the Library where they played for an hour before heading back over to Children's Safari.

We went back to Safari and the same parking spot was still available!  After expressing my disappointment to an extremely young looking, yet mature, employee, she gave us additional tokens to the games for the mishap.  Okay, I'll take that.  She said Facebook was updated, which it wasn't, and that an email went out about the Sunday only event, which I never received.  The kids, who were oblivious to what was going on, played with the fake pizza while they waited.  As we entered the main play area, there were maybe a handful of kids in the building.  One teenager, most likely babysitting two young brothers, was playing baseball with a plastic bat and hitting a plastic ball across the room.  When my youngest got too close to the batter, who almost hit my youngest, I finally had to say something.  Needless to say, the game ended immediately after I told them this is unsafe.  Where was the owner or adult employee, or just someone with commone sense?  Why did I have to tell the teen that swinging a bat indoors with other kids around was unsafe?

After my crew tired of going up and down the jungle gym and slide, it was time to use the tokens I received with admission, plus the extra ones for our earlier trouble, and play some games.  What a disaster this turned out to be.  The majority of the token-only games were broken.  All three Skee Ball machines, my favorite, were broken. The basketball hoop game didn't work and I don't think Big Bertha has ever worked since we first visited years ago.  She spit out tickets but she doesn't move at all.  She just sits there with her mouth open.  We played one game of the life-sized Hungry Hungry Hippos and during the game the Hippos apparently had enough to eat because even they stopped moving.  The Hockey game...broken.  There were two games that worked which we tried but that was about it.  I'm sure a few others worked, I hope, but the games that got my trio's attention were pretty disappointing.

One Facebook fan of Valley Stream Mom's said that in her experience at Safari was that she expected a little more for the price she paid and the proprietor wasn't very friendly.  I totally agree.  If you're going to own a children's play space the least you could do is like children (or act like you like them) or be friendly.  I personally don't care for the place but as a parent it's not always about you but about your children.  I want to do what makes them happy and brings them fulfillment but Children's Safari, in my opinion, wasn't it.

Children's Safari gets a time out.

It's Time To Dance!

I don't know what it is about Yo Gabba Gabba that the kids like, but I find them a bit annoying.  But, for the kids sake I will definitely be in the house rockin' it with the rest of Valley Stream's toddlers.  I do admit that some of their annoying songs are quite catchy.  My personal favorite is "Happy Birthday" by the Ting Tings.  If "Hold Still" comes on, watch your toes.  My son goes nutz on that song.  My husband and I have used "There's a Party in my Tummy" to get our kids to eat foods they ordinarily wouldn't eat or decided they didn't like after having leftovers three days in a row.  I don't cook much in the summer so don't judge me.

Details are listed below.  Don't count on seeing DJ Lance.  I don't think he'll be in the house.  It's too hot to wear that fuzzy hat in this heat anyway. Admission includes Gabbas one time appearance promptly at 11:45 a.m. for a 30 minute performance, arts and craft project, tattoo, dancing with prizes (my son has this in the bag), and kosher snack (chips or pretzels and apple juice).  See you there!

LePlay Cafe

I discovered one of the cutest little play spots ever. LePlay Cafe is an indoor playspace with a lounge located in Bellemore. Why so far away? It's about a 20 minute ride from Valley Stream but so worth it. I first found them on Facebook and then decided to check them out after seeing some of their cute status updates in my FB feed. For example, the post "Curious George" is their FB special where guests who mention the phrase receives $1 off of admission. How cute is that? I took the kids to check it out and was pleasantly surprised.

What makes this a unique playspace is that it's part cafe (for parents) and part playspace. Parents catch up with friends while sipping on a hot or cold beverage or get a little work done, which I chose to do, while the kids are steps away playing their hearts away with adult supervision. Parents can choose to play with their little ones or if yours are as old as mine, you can check over the half-wall time to time to make sure they're okay. Music is continuously played as movies are played on the wall while the kids are buzzing between the various play stations, dress up stations, games, and mini play ground. What I like best is that there are a few adults in the area to play with the kids! Socks are required but if you forget like I did, don't worry. Socks are available for purchase for just $1/pair for adults and children.

It's such a great idea that the owner of The Little Gym - Merrick, brought his kids in to play. "Like" their FB page and let them know that Valley Stream Mom referred you by saying "Hi, ValleyStreamMom.com reffered me" on their FB page.

Fillin' the Gap

School is officially out for many of us but camp isn't starting for another 2 weeks or so. So what do you do with your children in the interim? Unlike last year, I am now prepared for the time between the end of school and the beginning of camp. There are a few community programs available to fill the gap but unfortunately they're not working family friendly because of the program times. Below are three known programs you can send your child to before and after summer camp:

Playdate: Chilibeans

I’m always searching for unique play spots in the area. Unfortunately this one isn’t in Valley Stream, but is in Hempstead about 15 minutes from Valley Stream. It is definitely unique. It’s a private party/play space for children but also has open play time centered around story time and arts and crafts. It’s appears to be a great place for group play dates and requires an appointment. Cost for each child is just $10 with a $5 flat fee for each sibling. Once school is out, I plan to invite my daughter’s friends for a girly play date. Birthday Party packages available.

Check back and see how things turned out.
