National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month

After just over one week of school being back in session, I am so pleased to learn that Valley Stream Daughter's school has a Mileage Club where students are encouraged to walk during recess, and in community events.  I'm amazed that she would elect to forgo hanging on the monkey bars to walk around the school yard. I'm so proud.

On August 31st, the President signed a proclamation regarding National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, which is being observed this September. The President stressed that childhood obesity is a serious public health issue, and in making this proclamation, encouraged our country to commit ourselves to addressing this problem and to engage in healthy lifestyles. Check out all the ways you can play a role this September!

White House Easter Egg Roll Lottery Today

As luck would have it, I just may not get the opportunity to enter today's White House Easter Egg Roll this year.  Why? It conflicts with the "big trip" we're taking around the same time.  Darnit!  We just had dinner in Atlanta with our Best Man and his wife who entered the lottery last year and were awarded tickets.  It sounds like an amazing time!

My sources say that you are notified within 3 days of entry.  I'm not clear on whether or not you need to have your ss# ready at time of entry or if you need to submit them afterwards.  I would think the White House needs to run a check on the folks they're inviting to THE most famous address in the land.  Enter lottery here.

Good luck!!

P.S. Details on our "big trip."  I'm reluctant to blog about it given our 3 year old can read.  That alone has it's plusses and minuses.

Let me know if you get in.

Video: #MochasatWH White House Mom's Briefing

Last week, I visited the White House for an historical briefing with other Mocha Moms around the country.  The benefit of joining this support group for stay-at-home-moms of color has been amazing.  I will provide infomation on this natinal organization at a later time.  Not a mom?  This briefing is really for ALL women.

Please take a moment to watch the entire video or in part as time allows.  Grab a pen and paper.  Grab some tissue because there are moments that will touch your heart.  You're a woman.  You're a mom.  You're emotional when it comes to your children.  We're human and we cry.  You can hear my question at the 1:16:00 mark to Tina Tchen, Michelle Obama's Chief of Staff and Assistant to the President.

Enjoy your day!

Mom's Briefing at the White House

I am no stranger to the White House.  I have memories as a little girl of many trips to Washington, D.C. where during one trip my family visited The White House during the Carter Administration.  One of my fondest memories is that of my sisters and I meeting the White House Butler as President Carter sat in the Oval Office steps away from where we stood.  At one point, I tired of visiting our nation's capital and didn't care to ever go back. As a political wife and former history museum publicist, I have grown to like politics (not everything about it), developed an interest in history, and love walking the streets of the capital of the United States of America.

Little did I know that two decades later my family and I would be given a private tour of the West Wing of the White House by a friend of my husband's who worked for the Obama Administration all within a day's notice.  It pays to have connections. It was surreal and will go down as the most memorable experience of my life.  So I thought.

For the third time in my life, I was granted historical access to the White House along with fellow Mocha Moms from Queens, Long Island, and across the country.  Why, you ask, is this historic?  For the first time, a group of African American women who are primarily stay-at-home mothers were given access to some of the Obama Administration's key leaders.  Wow.

I had little idea of what the day would entail.  Eight MochAmazing women from the Queens/Long Island Chapter of Mocha Moms were asked to arrive at 8:30 a.m. but our excitement told us to arrive early.  The excitement won.  We were the 2nd group to arrive awarding me, as the first person from our group to enter the room, to choose seat #1.  I don't recall knocking anyone out of my way but people have been known to block events out of their mind.  Just kidding.  I would later be asked to move down two seats to accommodate two national Mocha Mom board members.  I'm still okay with that.  I was at The White House.

What made this experience so memorable was being surrounded by other mothers who who are just like me.  Mothers who care about their children's health, fitness and access to healthy food.  Mothers who want affordable healthcare for their children.  Mothers who care about their children's education.  Mothers who care about the stories and struggles of other mothers.

There were several memorable moments during the 3-hour conversation, however one take away from this experience will forever be etched in my mind.  As a mother you often wonder if the sacrifice you make to leave your career to care for your children is appreciated.  If the sacrifice is noticed.  You often wonder if you're doing the right thing for your children, family, and for yourself.  It is and you are.  The reason why we were invited to The White House is because the Obama Administration, the highest office in America, wanted us to know these three simple, yet powerful, words that make a huge impact to moms.  "We see you."

We all started to cry.  That's affirmation enough.

I look forward to sharing snippets of the conversation complete with loads of information you may or may not know about.  Stay tuned to upcoming posts.

An Invitation to the White House

Last week, I was honored with an invitation to participate in an historic Mom's Briefing, VIP Reception and tour of the East Wing of the White House which is scheduled for this Thursday.  The invitation was extended to the members of Mocha Moms, a support for mothers of color who have chosen not to work full-time outside of the home in order to devote more time to their families and communities.  After going back to work four months after I had my daughter, I decided to resign from my full-time job after six months back from maternity leave.  My work environment had become hostile and was no longer working mom friendly.  Now that's a group that needs protection.

I joined Mocha Moms while living in Brooklyn, NY for mommy networking.  After moving to Valley Stream four years ago, I joined the Queens Chapter of Mocha Moms which also includes members from Long Island.  As a group, we have Mom's Night Out, book clubs, monthly events for the children, etc.  The spirit of community abounds in this group.  Just last night, the chapter came out in full force to support my ValleyStreamMom.com Valentine's Day Party.  I was truly honored.

Getting on "the list" was not easy.  In fact, it was stressful.  I first noticed a Facebook status from one of the chapter's leaders letting us know she was going as were other chapter leaders across the country.  I wondered, how can I get in on this? One evening, the invitation was extended to the general membership.  Of all the nights to let my phone die and not charge it as I fell asleep on the sofa, my opportunity had come and gone by the time I woke up at 11 p.m.  I was pretty upset with myself.  I am ALWAYS connected to email, etc.  I then had to remind myself that if it was meant to be it will be.

I reached out to my chapter president to ask her to write a guest post on her experience because I still wanted to document the experience even if it wasn't personal.  A day or so later, I was returning from the mall with my children and just as I walked across the threshold of my door, I received notice that the list had re-opened.  I ran to my laptop to register and made the list. However, the confirmation didn't come until three LONG days had passed.  And now, I too am going to the White House to make history with over 100 other Mocha Moms and VIPs across the country.  Be sure that I will represent my current you well.
