Mother & Son Showcase Art @ Sip This Exhibit

Did you know that Sip This is hosting an art exhibit this weekend featuring 20 local artists?  What specifically caught my attention was the mother/son duo who will be showing original creations from the pair.  How awesome is that?  I'm FB friends with Mom Amanda, who is also a fellow/local mom blogger from Long Beach and hosts the site Baby Green Design and Baby Green Design.  Not a mistake.  She has two very different sites for different functions.  You should check out her site. I contacted the duo to find out exactly what they will be showing.

Amanda says:

"When Chris, the creator, started to spread the word that he was setting up an art show at the coffee shop, it sparked an idea I had wanted to execute for a long time working in collaboration with someone to make multi-media pieces. I concurrently observed how all the art made in my son's school was great, but always directive (i.e.: paint what you did over Spring Break, draw a tiger, etc). So I wanted him to have a totally freeing, "no rules," "anything goes" art experience, as well as a sense of what the collaborative art process is like. We call our series CO-CREATION and will be showing four collages in the show at Sip This called "TV," "Home," "Faith," and "War", and will continue to make them for sale in my Etsy Shop because we had a lot of fun doing it. You can see by the names of them that they are each a bit political in nature but he's a very conscious kid so it was a natural expression. The pieces still remain playful and interesting, regardless of their message. I hope you'll get a chance to come by and see our pieces and all the work of the 20 or so artists."

I contacted Sip This co-owner David Sabatino who says, "Stephanie (Pontillo) and I are very excited for Friday's art show,"  This is our first collective art show featuring many different artists and styles. We love offering our space to artists and giving the community an opportunity to see something new every month."

Good things are happening here in Valley Stream, dont'cha think?

(Sorry for the font change but copying/pasting from FB doesn't work well.)

The ARTWORKS group show will include the work of over 20 local New York artists. Media will range from painting to photography to sculpture and beyond.

Come join the artists at the opening reception on Friday,
June 15th from 7pm until 10pm. Music will be played and complimentary refreshments will be served.

If you can't make it to the opening stop by for a coffee and check out the show any another day up until July 6th.

*Artwork will be for sale but must hang until the close of the show on July 6th. 100% of sales go directly to the artists.

Calling All Aspiring Teen Artists

Kudos to The Henry Waldinger Library, a.k.a. Valley Stream Public Library, for hosting a Teen Painting Program on Friday, January 27th at 6:30 p.m.  "Piecing It Together with Willem de Kooning" is sponsored by the Long Island Children's Museum.  Teens will create an abstract collage and painting, inspired by the art and life of the famous Long Island painter.  Registration is required and limited to the first 20 participants.  Call (516) 825-6422 to reserve your spot.
All too often I have heard that there isn't much to do for teens in Valley Stream.  This is why I will launch Valley Stream Teen, a tab on this website, not a new website in the next week.  I am finding that there are tons of things for teens to do.  Our teens are just too picky and often confused about what it is they want to do.  Just my two cents.

Stay tuned!

Art in the Park & Boutique Craft Fair

Art in the Park - 2010

This Saturday, Envision Valley Stream's highly anticipated Art in the Park event will take place on the Village Green. According to the Valley Stream edition of the Long Island Herald, the purpose of the event was to provide an outlet for residents to appreciate the creative work of students and local artists from Valley Stream, Long, Beach, Floral Park and nearby locations.

Expect to see artwork from Valley Stream students of all ages. I have to add that VS has some pretty talented students. I remember walking through the halls of District 13 a few months ago and saw the artwork of Memorial Junior High School students on the wall. I was pretty impressed and I'm sure art fair attendees will be as well.

Added to the event this year will be a Boutique Craft Fair where attendees can purchase an array of items as well as try their luck in winning raffle prizes.
