Danse Xpressions Presents "The Wiz" Today!

Ease on down to the Village Bandshell tomorrow at 4 p.m. for Danse Xpressions' rendition of "The Wiz."  I stopped by the dance camp yesterday morning to snap a few photos and I immediately became excited when I learned they were doing this piece.  I can't say this enough but I LOVE THE WIZ! It is and will always be my favorite musical.  I even sang a song or two from the soundtrack during my pageant days.  But this is not about me and my longing to play Dorothy while easing down the road.

It's about the talented youngsters ranging from Munchkins, literally, to teens who have dedicated their summer vacation to learning new dance moves and lines in order to bring you their rendition of The Wiz.  For FREE!!!

Now the school isn't presenting the piece line by line, dance move by dance move.  They are putting their very own flavor on it.  What's also interesting is that all of the costumes were created by the dancers themselves during the arts and craft portion of the summer camp.

Are you excited yet?  Bring your lawn chair, blanket, snack and excitement to see this amazing performance by Valley Stream's talented youth.

Cinderella Visits Lynbrook

Sorry for the poor photo but I had to tell you that Cinderella is coming to Lynbrook today to find her glass slipper. Bring a blanket, snack, chair. More importantly, bring your imagination.

Spring Fashion, Princesses, and Joey Bonsai

Before I start my action packed day, I wanted to let you know about a few events coming up.  First thing this morning, I received an email from the Theatre at Westbury. Look for Snow White on July 24th, Beauty and the Beast on July 17th, and Cinderella on August 7th.  Looks like they have the three major princesses covered for the summer.  I'm not sure which one I'll try to see.  I truly hope the performances are Broadway quality.

Mark your calendar for this weekend when the Henry Waldinger Memorial Library will host "From Sea to Shining Sea: Iditarod Stories @ 2 p.m. for grades K-6 with a parent/caregiver.  Tickets are required.

Mocha Moms is hosting a Spring Renew YOU Fashion Show & Beauty Fundraiser at the American Legion here in Valley Stream.  Tickets are available online or at the door for $10 (members) and $15 (non-members).  The event will feature a runway fashion show, fashion tips, make up and image consulting, raffles, and much more.  This is kid-free zone so find a sitter!

Home Depot will host the "Clean, Green, and Valley Stream" Community event on Saturday, May 5th from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.  I'll try to get my hands on an official flyer to post but you can expect a kid's workshop, raffles, bouncy house, cotton candy, balloon animals, pinatas, live animals, Zumba dancing, live music, sports clinic and much more.   Oh, and they say that Joey Bonsai will be back by popular demand.  I have no idea who Joey is but if he's the guy who sits at the front of the store with a pair of shears and a plant, I'm in.  He seems pretty knowledgeable.  If this is the guy, I asked him if Ivy will grow in shaded areas.  He said, "Ivy will grow in your living room floor if you water it!"  Heeelarious!

We're Going to the #Fresh Beat Band Concert Today!

Today, I'm putting on my rock star jacket, and taking my loco legs on over to the NYCB Theatre at Westbury to the Fresh Beat Band concert.  My kids are totally clueless and I love it.  I'm pretty proud of myself for not spilling the beans even when I wanted to hold it over their heads during a less than angelic tantrum.  Tickets are available on Stub Hub for $300 - $800.  Are they CRAZY??  We bought ours for about $50 each.  Yesterday there were 3 tickets in Row for $300 a pop and now they're gone.  Really?

I admit that the Nick Jr. hit show is a bit annoying, but the music totally rocks.  There's just something about  31 (Twist), 26 (Kiki),  27 (Marina), and Shout (approximately 30) year old adults dressed in skirts, leggings, and tight, collegiate sweaters acting the way they do that irritates me.  Do the kids realize they're watching adults act like kids?  But my kids love them so I have to act like I do as well.  What's best is that my little 3 year old rocker practically knows every song.  In full disclosure, I personally like "A Friend Like You" and we all rock out to "Just Like A Rock Star" available at Target.

Had it not been for a dear friend and Valley Stream Mom, we wouldn't be going to the concert.  As the FBB's sing, "Friends Give Friends A Hand."  I had no idea they were officially on tour.  Hubby and I were going to surprise the kids with a trip to the U.S. Open here in NY for Kids Day where the Fresh Beat Band were performing.  But then Hurricane Irene put a stop to that.  Doggone it!  Good thing I didn't tell them about the FBB'until I was questioned for the umptillionth time, "Mommy, when are WE gonna see the Fresh Beat Band?"  I can't wait to say when we approach the theatre, "Today!"  Big cheers for mommy, daddy and my friend, Tammy!

Favorite Things: StinkyKids

Last week, the kids and I travelled to the historic Madame Alexander Doll Company in Harlem for a Mom Blogger luncheon with Britt Menzies, the creator of StinkyKids.  If you haven't already heard of them, StinkyKids is the brainchild of mompreneur Britt Menzies who one day did what all of us moms do everyday.  She answered one of many requests she probably receives in a day be it a request for juice, a snack, or a painting of her daughter as a ballerina. The latter request has proven to be pretty significant turning it into a life-changing experience.

The award winning first book, StinkyKids and the Runaway Scissors, is now available for purchase at Barnes and Noble or on www.bn.com.  I read this book to the kids, courtesy of Britt herself, as we laid in my bed with StinkyKid Billy and StinkyKid Britt.  Both the kids and I loved this story which is about Britt, the doll not the auther who is a brunette, soliciting the help of other StinkyKids to help remove the gum from her hair.  Kids and gum are a bad combination so I'm sure you know how this story ends up.  Not giving it away too much, let's just say the way Britt looks on the cover of the is not how she looks at the end of the story.

Central High School Presents "Miracle Worker"

I recall reading the story of Hellen Keller in grade school and thinking what an amazing little girl she was. For those of us who have all of our senses unlike Hellen, we should never say what we can't do. This classic story will be told by the students of Central High School's Theatre Department this weekend.  See details below.

(Simon and Schuster) Based on the remarkable true story of Helen Keller and her teacher Annie Sullivan, this inspiring and unforgettable play has moved countless readers and become an American classic.

Young Helen Keller, blind, deaf, and mute since infancy, is in danger of being sent to an institution because her inability to communicate has left her frustrated and violent. In desperation, her parents seek help from the Perkins Institute, which sends them a "half-blind Yankee schoolgirl" named Annie Sullivan to tutor their daughter. Despite the Kellers' resistance and the belief that Helen "is like a little safe, locked, that no one can open," Annie suspects that within Helen lies the potential for more, if only she can reach her. Through persistence, love, and sheer stubbornness, Annie breaks through Helen's walls of silence and darkness and teaches her to communicate, bringing her into the world at last.

Giveaway: Two Tickets to "Pinkalicious The Musical:

On Saturday, October 15th, "Pinkalicious The Musical" moves into the Elmont Public Library's theater housed by Broadhollow Theater Company for three consecutive Saturdays at 2 p.m.  Over a year ago, I took my eldest on a theatrical playdate to Manhattan where we saw this performance.  It was sooo adorable as my daughter took her book with her and followed along with the performance.  Of course, being a musical it was a bit different but the story line was untouched. My favorite line and one that I often hear repeated by my kids is, "You get what you get and you don't get upset." I highly recommend seeing this show.  Don't forget to bring your book and of course, wear pink.
Win a pair of tickets by leaving a comment on this post.  For a bonus entry "Like" ValleyStreamMom on Facebook, follow us on Twitter (@valleystreammom, and join us on Google Friend Connect (see right sidebar).  Anonymous commenters are ineligible. Every entry increases your chances of winning two tickets valued at $20.  Contest ends Good luck!
