Giveaway: Little Sugar Shop $20 Gift Certificate

If you're an early reader of this blog, then you will remember that one of my very first posts was on Little Sugar Shop back in April.  My, how I love this place.  Just the other day, I stopped in to pick up a few cupcakes, one being what I call the apple pie cupcake which is simply to die for.  I don't know it's name but it is topped with the best apple filling known to man, well me anyway, with the right amount of cinnamon or is it nutmeg?  I don't know but this cupcake was the bomb!  I am a child of the 80s so yes, I can say "the bomb."

Because I love this bakery so much and the owner is such a lovely woman and mother who is truly talented in so many ways, she is giving one lucky winner a $20 gift card to a ValleyStreamMom.com reader.  Contest ends Sunday, November 27th at midnight and the lucky winner will be announced first thing Monday morning.  Good luck!

First Unofficial Day of Summer (for me) and I'm Unprepared

After a school picnic, tap and ballet class, marriage conference, family carnival, two pageants, birthday party, and celebrating Father's Day, I now think I know why my body is sore. I am extremely exhausted, however, that did not stop Monday from arriving on time. Summer is officially upon us and I woke up this morning unprepared to greet it. My eldest "stepped up" from Pre-K last week and finished the celebration with a school picnic at Lynbrook's Greis Park. On Saturday, we took the kids to Shaw Avenue Elementary Schools Family Carnival where they had about 6 bouncies, great music, cotton candy, and games for all to enjoy. The PTA at Shaw did a fabulous job and I look forward to attending next year's event as well. Today is Monday and my youngest is two weeks away from completing a Super Beast class at The Little Gym of Merrick for 2-3 year olds. I woke up thinking that I have nowhere to take my eldest, who is 5, while we attend gym class. With better planning, I would have dropped her off at the Children's Safari...I mean, didn't I put this on my blog last week? Anyhow, my son’s part-time daycare provider came through for me and was able to watch my daughter for 2 hours. It’s always smart to have back up but even that could have been a disaster. Apparently small daycares can only accept two school aged children daily, and being that she isn’t a full time client the daycare didn’t have to accept her. But thank God she did!

Now, we are at the library where I just signed up both kids for the Summer Reading Program. Upon registration, the kids are given two, colorful bookmarks with the theme “One World, Many Stories.” Participants are encouraged to not only read 6 – 18 books during the summer, but also asked to send a postcard to the library while on vacation this summer. At the end of the summer, participants will be celebrated through special interactive programs where they will receive certificates for completing the program.

Now that my eldest is out of school, you just may see us strolling along Rockaway sampling week’s cupcakes at the local bakeries, stopping by Itgens to show my newest Valley Stream mom THE best ice cream ever, or wading in the Valley Stream pool. Who knows, you may even catch me teaching my eldest how to ride her bike. But for now, I have to take the kids to a birthday party at the Rockville Centre Recreation Centre. It never ends, does it? Enjoy your week!

Little Sugar Shop

Last week was a whirlwind of a week so I'm just now getting caught up on a few posts. The other day, I popped my head into Valley Stream's newest bakery, The Little Sugar Shop, to see what kind of treats were available to satisfy my sweet tooth. Boy, was I EVER satisfied! The shop was small in size but buzzing with activity as the smell of icing and freshly baked goodies filled the air. It was so adorable inside with delights perfectly placed to greet me the moment I walked into the door. The first thing that caught my eye was the ever-so moist red velvet cupcake with what seemed like a foot of cream cheese butter cream icing sprinkled with a little sugar on top. Yum!

I was greeted immediatley by the owner, who was extremely pleasant and helpful as she walked me through the choices I had to make while placing my order. She had a smile on her face the entire time! Not only that, but I had my daughter with me who was foaming at the mouth after spotting a cupcake with rainbow sprinkles. After the owner drew a mock up of the cake I wanted, she encouraged my daughter to draw a cake and complimented her replica of the cake with maternal love as if she were her own. “My main thing is to make sure that the customer is happy and that we deliver a great product,” said Vyancka Kilimet, owner of the Little Sugar Shop, as told to the Long Island Herald back in March.

Days later I returned to pick up the cake and again the shop was abuzz with activity. The shop was filled with three generations of women filling the orders of Valley Streamer's celebratory requests. My order was ready at the time requested. In addition to impeccable customer service, she was going to give me two complimentary red velvet cupcakes. My husband wanted to change the filling to red velvet last minute but she had already baked the cake by the time I called her to make the change. How is that for keeping the customer happy?
