Kickin' Off the Weekend

Courtesy of Center for Science, Teaching, & Learning

When I first moved to Valley Stream nearly five years ago, I said to myslef, "There's nothing to do here."  Boy was I wrong!  I just didn't know where to find all of the information regarding activities and events for children.  If you don't have any children in school, you wouldn't either.  Well, that's what ValleyStreamMom.com is all about.  Remember to confirm whether or not the event is still taking place as events change dates all the time.  And a little more....enjoy your weekend!

Winter Recess Outings - NY Science Museum

Museum guest Chloe explains how a Network works to my children

I just couldn't get myself together Monday morning and at the last minute found my mojo.  I took the kids to the New York Science Museum after learning that the Long Island Children's Museum was closed.  I thought it was anyway.  Being married to an attorney still has not taught me to "read the fine print." Anyhoo, the science museum was extremely crowded which I figured, however I went late in the day.  Didn't matter.  The experience was just okay.  The Preschool room was not only crowded but had a waiting list.  I also took a bump on the hip by a rude employee who hit me with the half door outside of the prschool play area and didn't even say excuse me.  I don't think he realized he was at risk for being blogged about.  These days, we're ALL at risk.  Next, it seemed as if the employees were clues less as to where certain events were held.  As a former museum publicist, I don't expect everyone to know everything, but it would make sense for employees to have a schedule of events on them.  Instead he pointed and said "over there" is where I could find a list.

Early Childhood Program @ Long Island Children's Museum

Music & Movement Program @ LICM - Garden City, NY

What a weekend it has been! Beginning last Friday, I took my youngest on a play date at the Long Island Children's Museum in Garden City. Our weekly sitter was unavailable so I decided to engage his mind and body in other activities. We have a membership to the museum and receive a discounted entry fee to all of the special activities and events. Click here for a list of the museum's Early Childhood Programs. A bonus to having a membership, while we traveled to Boston last month, we got free admission to the Boston Children's Museum which was amazing! Check back for details on the Boston Museum in a later blog.

Tip:

The Henry Waldinger Memorial Library (and most libraries) has initiated a Family Museum Pass Program where families in good standing are able to borrow a museum pass that allows them to visit the institution for free. This pilot program was made possible by a generous donation to the library by the Valley Stream Cultural Affairs Committee. Passes are available for the American Museum of Natural History, Children's Museum of Manhattan, Clark Botanic Garden, Cradle of Aviation Museum, Garvies Point Preserve, Long Island Children's Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York Botanical Garden, Old Westbury Gardens, and Paley Center for Media. Ask at the Adult Reference Desk for further information and the availability of passes.
