Free Aquatic Show Saturday @ VS Pool Complex

Did anyone see the Olympic Synchronized Swimming event yesterday?  How creative, talented, and cool was that?  Who thinks of this stuff?

The Valley Stream Aquatic Show is happening Saturday, August 11th at 7:30 p.m. at the Hendrickson Pool Complex.  Doors open at 7 p.m.  I would advise you to arrive early for preferred seating.  The event is free and open to the public.  You do not need a pool pass to attend.  In past years, approximately 300 people have attended so arrive early.

The LI Herald has a great article on the Valley Stream Swim Team in this week's paper.  Check it out here.

Enjoy the show!

Danse Xpressions Presents "The Wiz" Today!

Ease on down to the Village Bandshell tomorrow at 4 p.m. for Danse Xpressions' rendition of "The Wiz."  I stopped by the dance camp yesterday morning to snap a few photos and I immediately became excited when I learned they were doing this piece.  I can't say this enough but I LOVE THE WIZ! It is and will always be my favorite musical.  I even sang a song or two from the soundtrack during my pageant days.  But this is not about me and my longing to play Dorothy while easing down the road.

It's about the talented youngsters ranging from Munchkins, literally, to teens who have dedicated their summer vacation to learning new dance moves and lines in order to bring you their rendition of The Wiz.  For FREE!!!

Now the school isn't presenting the piece line by line, dance move by dance move.  They are putting their very own flavor on it.  What's also interesting is that all of the costumes were created by the dancers themselves during the arts and craft portion of the summer camp.

Are you excited yet?  Bring your lawn chair, blanket, snack and excitement to see this amazing performance by Valley Stream's talented youth.

Final Show Today! Darlene Graham & Shades of Green Band

I took Valley Stream Kids to see the "Stomp It Up" show with Darlene Graham & Shades of Green Band at Rath Park yesterday in Franklin Square and boy, did we have a good time!  The FREE concert, sponsored by the Town of Hempstead, started on time and featured many favorite kiddie selections such as "Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes," (which Valley Stream Son couldn't keep up with), "I Want Candy," "Happy and You Know It" and Yo Gabba Gabba favorite, "Let's Get the Sillies Out."

Former school teacher Graham introduced and played the tin whistle which she has played since she was a little girl, her husband (Shades of Green Band) played the gourd, and I think I heard her mention a glockenspiel.  I don't think I've heard one of those since Mrs. Danner's music class in the 6th grade.

She is playing her final concert of the summer for the Town of Hempstead today at Elmont's Hendrickson Park at 10:30 a.m.  It's FREE and definitely a must see.

Here's a few tips for you:

  1. Take a blanket to sit on if you want to sit up close
  2. Take a lawn chair if you don't mind sitting in the back
  3. Be prepared to dance with your little one
  4. Be prepared to hug and kiss your little one during one of the songs
  5. Take a snack and a beverage
  6. Take bug spray and sun block (just in case)
  7. Have a good time!

Final show in the Town of Hempstead for Darlene Graham
Friday, July 20th
Time: 10:30 a.m.
Hendrickson Avenue Park - Elmont (Not in Valley Stream)

(She did tell me that she will be performing at the End of Summer Reading Club Celebration at the Valley Stream Library on August 21st.  I hope you're registered!)

Free Bowling Anyone?

I married into a bowling family. My mother-in-law bowls on several leagues and she directs tournaments.  We used to bowl after every holiday growing up.  Even on Christmas.   Bowling runs so deep in my husband's veins that Valley Stream Son plays it on our phones, on the iPad, and even knows what three strikes in a row is called.  It's called a Turkey if you didn't know. He's already planning his next birthday party before his upcoming party is held. Geez.  Looks like I better take advantage of this summer offer. You should too.

South High School Offers FREE Preschool

If you have pre-school hopefuls at home, now is the time to test the waters for both your bunchkin and you.  I think you need a dry run to see how strong you are and to have an idea of how many tissues you will need on the official first day of preschool or even Kindergarten in the fall.

Two years ago, I took my almost first grader to South High School's pre-school program and she loved it.  I don't recall smelling chocolate chip cookies during pick up as I did during North High School's preschool earlier this year, but my son was pretty happy with the program.  He still asks. "Mommy, what school am I going to today?" I say, "You're going to nursery school." He replies with a sigh.  I don't think he realizes how young he is sometimes.

According to the Valley Stream Herald, the program will include games, educational projects, and activities based on a daily theme related to books created and written by the high school students.  I highly recommend this program and would be right there with you if the dates/times worked with our existing class schedule.  Lord knows that after losing my back up child care provider, I could use a break Tues/Wed/Fri from 11:40 a.m. - 1:20 p.m.  What kind of times are these?  When my daughter attended, hours were 8:30 a.m. - 10 a.m. or something which gave me just enough time to run to BJ's and beat the horrific lines. Who cares.  Any free time is a good time right now if you're in my world.

Mommy Tip: Invite your child's friend to make separation a little easier.

South High School Pre-School Program
Duration of program: May 1 - 29 (Tues/Wed/Fri)
Time: 11:40 a.m. - 1:20 p.m.

Free Music Together Demo - Registration Limited

My kids simply loved this class.  As a matter of fact while living in Brooklyn in 2006, it was my then 6 month old daughter's very first class.  Shortly after moving to Valley Stream over 4 years ago with our then 2 year old daughter, I found a class right here in Valley Stream at Broadway Bound Dance Studio.  It was a struggle for me to sit on the floor for very long being 4 months pregnant and all at the time.  Wait, maybe sitting down was the easy part.  Getting up wasn't as easy.  Miss Dorell, owner of In Step With Music Together LLC, was the instructor and I recall one mom with the cutest little girl, next to mine of course, who was so happy and energetic.  Miss Cheryl later became an instructor and my son's first crush. Well, that's the way I see it anyway but maybe it was the first sign of him being a flirt.

Anyhoo, Music Together is a class that every child should experience, and ValleyStreamMom.com wants you to do just that.  For FREE!!!  You know I LOVE all things FREE!  Details are below.  If you are unable to register, please email me at valleystreammom@gmail.com to be placed on the waiting list.  For priority registration, register with ValleyStreamMom.com by clicking on the link foron the right hand side of the menu bar at the top first dibbs.  Trust me.  It's worth it.

Music Together is an internationally recognized early childhood music and movement program for babies, toddlers, preschoolers, kindergartners, and the adults who love them. First offered to the public in 1987, it pioneered the concept of a research-based, developmentally appropriate early childhood music curriculum that strongly emphasizes and facilitates adult involvement.
Music Together classes are based on the recognition that all children are musical. All children can learn to sing in tune, keep a beat, and participate with confidence in the music of our culture, provided that their early environment supports such learning.
