Kindergarten/School Registration
If you're anything like me, I had no idea that I had to contact the public elementary school we are sending our daughter to to let them know that she will attend the school in the fall. We assumed we would get something in the mail informing us about registration but never did. I contacted the school only to find out that they had a schedule of ongoing events beginning back in November through June that the incoming Kindergarten students needed to attend to get used to the school. Not a bad idea, but it would have been nice if the school reached out to us. How about sending a friendly postcard or letter to all of the tax payers in Valley Stream. I'm sure they get those checks from us so it would be nice if they sent a thank you note and registration dates for incoming students. Pre-K here on the island is not free, however there is an area in Valley Stream that is part of the Hewlett school district and has free Pre-K. Wish I had know that...
Here is a link to all of the public school districts. VS School District 13 posts their registration packet online. I wasn't able to find the links to the other districts. Be prepared to give your first born while filling out the packet. They ask for alot of information so don't wait until the last minute.

I found this out last minute when my oldest was little...good thing my neighbor had a child the same age and already had an older one in school so she gave me all the information. You are never too late to register your child in the public school system, but like you said, you miss out on all the ongoing FREE activities the district may offer. Every taxpayer in the district should get a school calendar even if you don't have registered kids in the district. If everyone had a calendar they would know. I always try to pass information along to new neighbors or people I know have kids that are of age to be registered.
ReplyDeleteYour website is so helpful. I do not know many people in the area that have little children and it has been hard to find any of this information. I even called a month ago and was told registration is this coming Monday, but was not told that I would have to fill out a Registration packet, etc. Thanks so much...I would have been super upset if I went in on Monday only to find that I did not have all the proper paperwork complete!
ReplyDeleteI am enjoying all the informative information on your blog. Thank you! I totally agree, why aren't we notified about all the FREE programs for our young children and alerted of very important dates regarding schools. Thank you so much for posting and sharing your knowledge with other Valley Stream Mommies!
