If you are applying to college this fall, don't wait until the last minute to write your personal essay. The mistake a lot of students make is that they make their essay generic as opposed to tailored to the college they are applying to. Colleges want to know that you are truly interested in attending their school and that you will be a great addition to their institution. Submitting a "one size fits all" essay shows that you are looking for an easy way out. This short-cut can be the difference between being "ACCEPTED" or being "DENIED". College admission offices receive thousands of applications each year, so be sure to write an essay that is memorable instead of miserable.

3 Easy Tips to Writing a Great College Essay

Start Early!
Give yourself enough time to brainstorm, which will make the writing process easier. Often you have various topics you can choose from, but you may just be asked to share something interesting about yourself.

Keep it Real
Don't lie about your experiences to make your college essay more interesting. Write about a topic that you are passionate or knowledgeable about. If you want to use humor, that's OK.  Just make sure your humor is appropriate for the audience that will be reading it.

Proofread
Have a teacher, parent or guidance counselor proofread your essay. Ask them to double-check to make sure you answered the question being asked, that your essay is clear, relevant and that there are no grammatical errors.

For additional help, pick up the following books at your local library or bookstore:
