Six Suggestions To Get Your Kid To Eat

Not me, but this is pretty much what I look like right now, but I have a leopard robe.
Rising Frustration #1

I'm finding it increasingly difficult to find time to blog these days.  It's been a whirlwind of a week and now Valley Stream Son's camp ended.  Arrggh!  In addition to that, Valley Stream Daughter's camp closed early yesterday due to the weather.  Double Arrggh!  Not only were they home longer than usual, but they have been pretty vocal about the amount of time I've been spending on the lap top.  I'm not sure if it's a complaint or if they want me off so they can play games on it.  If I change up my routine and blog at night then it will affect cuddle time with Valley Stream Dad.  Either way, I can't win.  My sitters are on vacation so I can't even call them to come over and play with the kids while I type away.  I'm headed for frustration and I have alot to blog about and so many places to post them.  What to do?

Rising Frustration #2

I'm sitting here supervising breakfast time with Valley Stream Kid who simply refuses to eat in a timely manner.  I don't get it.  He's a boy.  Aren't boys supposed to shove everything into their mouths?  A few of my Facebook fans have suggested the following:

  1. Make it a game
  2. Make cute mini pancakes or waffles
  3. Serve waffles with peanut butter and chocolate (really?)
  4. Put an array of food out from which he can choose (who has time for that?)
  5. Continue to bring out unfinished food for lunch and dinner while the others eat different foods
  6. Give him a set time to eat and when time is up it's up (seems a bit cruel, but worth a try)
I'm a little concerned about using some of the methods, but I may try some others.  A few foods I know he will eat are:
Might be a possibility for breakfast.....
  1. Chinese Fried rice
  2. Apple Sauce
  3. Baked chicken
  4. Peanut Butter & Jelly Sandwiches
  5. Tacos
  6. Chicken Nuggets
I'm starting to think that breakfast foods are about to get a little interesting around here.

What are your suggestions?

  1. My 6 year old has always been a good eater, but suddenly it's a daily fight to get him to actually eat food. And, you better hide all the chips, cookies, etc in the house because he WILL eat them all instead of eating food. I've had to become a junk food nazi! He is being so weird! He'll eat something today, but tomorrow he'll say "I hate that", then the next day, he eats it just fine. So frustrating!

    1. Stacey, you are so right! Kids kill me with "I hate that" the day AFTER they just ate it. Frustrating!!!!

  2. Is it possible that he prepare the food with you? Does he like blueberries? Then how about making blueberry pancakes? Another idea with participation that might be faster b/c I know time is an issue and preparing blueberry pancakes together maybe defeats the whole purpose. Cut up fruit the night before and have him pick the fruit he wants to decorate his waffles with while the waffle is toasting. Print a few pictures out online of decorated waffles that will get him excited about it. I get that this takes a lot of time, and that he'll probably take forever to decorate and won't even get to the eating part, but what I've found is is if I'm patient and I start incorporating the child in the prep part that they eat more and engage more in the process...and then after all the work...in time, things speed up and we make breakfast time a faster process overall. Think about cereal with fruits on top. Give him a favorite spoon to pick out. Let him sprinkle the fruit on top, and then use a timer that he can see and hear and give him a set time to finish. Remember that children don't eat as large as a serving as us. Things like these sometimes work with some kids. They don't always, but it may be worth a try. I find that French toast sticks are faster than you think and kids eat them quickly. Just have the dipping plate ready before hand. Crack one egg and beat it, and take two pieces of bread. Dip them in and put them in a hot skillet. I do something else while they get brown and then cut them in strips. The kids can put fruit, confectioner's sugar (yes, terribly bad, but I do it) or syrup on the top. Only a little. They love these and it's really faster than you think. Try it. Good luck!

    1. Karen, these are all good ideas. I think part of the reason is that we aren't early risers so we sleep as long as we can and then breakfast is rushed. We're trying. But I do like the suggestion of having him shop with us and pick out the foods he likes. We just returned from a bday party and who was the last one eating? Yep, you guessed it!
