- Elmont, St. Albans, Laurelton Cub Scouts Win -

Valley Stream, New York – March 16, 2012 - A yearly highlight for Cub Scout packs across America, the Green Acres Mall hosted over 100 Queens area Cub Scouts for the 10th Annual “Founder’s District” annual Grand Prix Pinewood Derby.  Packs representing Flushing, Queens Village, St. Albans, Bayside, Whitestone and Cambria Heights turned out in full force to submit their “drivers” and race their handmade miniature pinewood derby cars down a 40-foot long track in Green Acres Mall center court, located outside of the JC Penney mall entrance.

“Green Acres Mall was thrilled to be a part of this event and watch these young men take pride in racing their handmade cars in front of such a captive, supportive audience,” said Trish Ketelsen, Marketing Director, Green Acres Mall.

The first place trophy was awarded to Joshua Dixon of pack 263, who resides in Elmont, NY
First, second and third place trophy awards were given for the four Cub Scout age levels: Tigers (1st graders), Wolves (2nd graders), Bears (3rd graders), Webelos (4th and 5th graders).  Two Best Design and two Most Original trophies were also awarded and all scouts received Pinewood Derby patches.  Names of winners below.

“The Pinewood Derby is the most exciting event of the year for the Cub Scouts, who each work tirelessly with parents and Cubmasters to design and build their custom race cars for all to see,” said Jason E. Tewes, Boy Scouts of America Greater, Borough of Queens District Director.  “We would like to thank the Green Acres Mall for supporting the Cub Scouts and hosting this annual event for the second consecutive year.”

The third place trophy was awarded to Brandon Francis of Pack 263 who resides in Laurelton, NY
Hundreds of Green Acres Mall shoppers, Cub Scout parents and Adult Leaders were on site on Saturday to cheer on the Cub Scouts for this American tradition, which dates back to the 1950’s.  Cub Scouts received their Pinewood Derby car kit of wheels, axles and a wooden block, back in January and held individual races in their hometowns before competing in the finals.  The Founder’s District Annual Grand Prix Pinewood Derby Winners include:
