Hurricane Advisory

Valley Stream is expected to be impacted by heavy rain and wind associated with Hurricane Irene on Sunday, August 28th. Residents who have any questions or concerns may call Valley Stream Public Safety/Code Enforcement officials for assistance at 516-369-3872. In the event of a dire emergency or life-threatening situation, please call 911 immediately.

The Village has taken all necessary measures to keep residents safe during this potential storm/emergency. Our Office of Emergency Management (OEM) will be open during the course of the storm to assist those who are in need. Our Department of Public Works has opened the weir of the culvert so that water flows quickly and smoothly in a southerly direction, from the northern tip of Hendrickson Lake all the way down to Mill Pond. We have also cleaned a number of the associated streams and ponds around the village to alleviate any potential flooding.

We have also cleaned out a number of Village sewers in high risk flood areas so that these drains can take on as much water as possible to prevent excessive ponding on our streets.

Further, our Department of Public Works has primed and readied six large vehicles, a backhoe, ropes, cones and barricades to service any fallen trees and limbs, and keep roadways and thoroughfares clear and safe.

The Village has been in contact with Nassau County emergency preparedness officials in the event that there is a need to evacuate a certain area and house people who may have had their homes damaged during the storm.

The safety and well-being of our residents is of paramount concern. Essential Village personnel will be actively working throughout the storm and available, should any emergencies arise.
